As humans, we are all born with 24 ribs (12 pairs), while, some of us are born with 26 ribs (13 pairs). Ribs main function is to protect our lungs, heart, and other internal organs. However, not all ribs in the body are considered a necessity. 7 sets of ribs in the body termed as true ribs (attached to breastbone and sternum), while the remaining 5 sets are termed false ribs (attached to cartilaginous tissue), in addition, the latter 2 sets of the false ribs termed floating ribs (not attached to any tissue in front). The floating ribs are commonly extracted during plastic surgery procedures, to equip patients with reduced waist size.
How We Do Rib Removal Surgery
Rib Removal Surgery is commonly performed on men and women that want to achieve an hourglass look. The procedure can be done in 1 to 2 hours and is a safe procedure if conducted by an experienced surgeon. First, the patient will be placed under general anesthesia. Dr. Michael K. Obeng will make a small 2-inch incision on the patients back, giving him access to the 11th and 12th pair, also known as, the floating ribs. Dr. Michael K. Obeng will separate the rib pairs from the vertebrate. After a successful procedure, Dr. Michael K. Obeng will seal the incisions with sutures.
Benefits After Rib Removal Surgery:
- Reduced waist line
- Hourglass figure
- Eliminates the risk of organ punctures caused by the breakage of the floating ribs
