Breast reconstruction is a necessary step in the healing process for many women after a mastectomy. However, invasive surgery such as the installation of implants can be off-putting. Fat grafting is an alternative technique that utilizes the patient’s own fat to reconstruct the breast shape. Fat can be removed from just about any part of the body, but is typically removed from the stomach, thighs or buttocks using liposuction. The fat is then transferred to the breast in order to recreate the shape.
How Do We Do Fat GraftingWhile fat grafting is a newer technique, the results speak for themselves. The procedure can be performed under either a local or general anesthetic. First, Dr. Michael K. Obeng will remove fat from the source area using standard liposuction. The removed fat is then liquefied before being injected into the target area. The liquefied fat holds its shape under the skin, creating a soft and natural breast.
